Make Your Own Contra Dance

Contra dancing is a little different than the folk dancing done at Michilimackinac or Fort Mackinac, but it has roots in what we do.  You can set up a little dance with this program.  If you have never done contra dancing, you can try it; many communities have contra dances.

Thistle Hill Weavers

Oooh.  Very pretty fabrics and weaves on the Thistle Hill Weavers site.  Makes you want to put everything in coverlets and carpet!

Jars and Containers

Specialty Bottle Company has great prices on period appropriate tin and glassware (or close to).  Also, you can get great prices on canning jars (look under eco mason under glass jars).

Food History News

Food History News was a fabulous little newsletter with a lot of information put out by ALFAM.  It stopped printing (you can find most of the issues copied at the Biddle House), but there is a website by Sandy Oliver, who knows a lot about historic receipts and foodways.  The website isn't as good as the newsletter, but thankfully we have both and a lot of good links to find out more information.

Historic Cookbooks

Feeding America:  The Historic American Cookbook Project is a great site with over 75 historic American cookbooks online to access at anytime.  There are some great ones that can pertain to the Mackinac area and times we represent.  It's also linked on the right side, too!

Kind of Crazy Food of the Past

From The New Yorker - The King's Meal

Mochaware

Don Carpentier is the only one I've found in the world who does mochaware pottery.  It's very expensive, but beautiful in its own way and very appropriate for the Biddle House.  Check out more of his works here.

1985

A picture of 1985 crafties.  Oh, have times changed!  Those are the infamous "wench" dresses.  However, please don't harshly criticize people of the past (ehem!) to make your outfits better.  What you're wearing is pretty good, but may be critiqued as well in 30 years!

Obviously not taken during open hours.

For all crafties, past and present, this blog is for you!

Craftie = Historic House Interpreter on Mackinac Island (Wench, HHIs, etc. have been used, too).
